The Törley family has played an important role in Hungarian wine production for more than 100 years. József Törley studied the art of wine making in Reims, France then returned to Hungary in the late 1800s to set up a sparkling wine production. He was so successful that he became enormously wealthy, and his factory is still a major producer of quality sparkling wine to this day. Located in Budafok, a southern suburb of the city, the factory is home to the largest wooden barrel in the world -still in use- and is an enormous complex. The cellar is several kilometers long and houses a museum showcasing the process and history of Törley sparkling wine production. Ninety minute guided tours can be arranged. While in the area, have a short walk up the hill to view the Törley Mausoleum. It is a beautiful structure overlooking a great panorama of the city and the walk takes you through the area of the district that was once a small village before becoming a part of Budapest.
