An important monument to Hungary, the Time Wheel was inaugurated on the day of the country’s acceptance into European Union, and thus commemorates the occasion. In reality it is not so much a clock as it is a sculpture depicting the notion of time through the form of an eight meter tall hour glass in the shape of a wheel. Built using modern technology and lasting materials, it utilizes ancient time measuring methods in a visually appealing way. Once a year, on New Year’s Eve, the wheel is turned halfway around using manual labor rather than mechanical devices to resume the flow of sand from top to bottom. Truly symbolic, the wheel was contributed to by many Hungarians, as anyone could help to add the sand during its construction.
The Time Wheel can be found on the edge of the City Park, near to Heroes Square, making it a pleasant and moving sight to see while exploring the park area. Just pass behind the Place Art from Heroes Square to find it.
