The Saint Michael’s Church

The Saint Michael’s Church, located downtown on Váci Street, was founded by Dominican monks fleeing from the Turks and returning to Pest in 1699. The one-nave, late Baroque church obtained its final form in 1765; by this time the main altar, the inlaid benches, the furniture of the vestry as well as the frescoes on the ceiling and walls were finished. The church’s first organ, ornamented with Baroque sculptures, was made in 1801 and reconstructed during interior renovations in 1892. Also at this time, the mosaic floor was laid down and glass doors were inserted. Between 1964 and 1968 there were renovations both outside and inside the church, during which time the paintings on the ceiling and walls were simply whitewashed. In 1997 and 1998 the church was fully restored, and a new clock was placed in the tower. The inner refurbishing has been ongoing since 1999. The ceiling fresco and the northern wall of the church can already be seen in their original beauty, and by the 2006 Baroque Festival the shrine will also have regained its genuine, 1765 splendor.
