The Museum of Transportation

The Museum of Transportation is one of Europe’s oldest transport collections. Its railway historic collection is of international significance. The museum covers all branches of transportation. The permanent exhibition, covering 8,000 square meters, even includes a contemporary railway station (roughly 100 years old), as well as beautiful and interesting cars. A special collection is devoted to public urban transport and includes original tickets, share and both certificates. The most important objects in the museum are the Southern Hungarian Railways goods train locomotive dating from 1861, the royal Hungarian Train’s saloon carriage dating from 1884, János Csonka’s postal tricycle dating from 1900, Porst’s state carriage dating from 1870, and a tramway with surface contact current collection dating from 1889. The immediate predecessor to the museum was the Hall of Transportation, at the 1896 Millennium Exhibition, part of the 100th year celebration of the settlement of Hungary. In 1987, a new building was added to the building’s reconstructed remainders.
