The Castle District in Budapest

A charming district on the top of a hill, the Castle District was once the site of an actual castle, but today houses several important buildings and the Royal Palace while exhibiting the charm of the old city.

The Buda Castle became part of the World Heritage in 1987.

Not only for its old houses and churches but for its panoramic view to the Pest side. During a 2 hour long walk it is possible to introduce the history and culture of Budapest and Hungary.

The tour goes through the whole district from the Royal Palace to the Vienna’s Gate and shows the important monuments and the most beautiful streets of the Castle District.

The majority of the Castle’s residential and public buildings are now protected historic properties. One of the capital’s most famous buildings stands at the middle of the Castle District, the Church of the Virgin Mary, which is commonly referred to as the Matthias Church.

In 1903 the Romanesque Revival Fishermen’s Bastion was erected upon the medieval castle walls, which has become one of the symbols of the city. Buda Castle’s Palace is one of the most important cultural centers in the country; its buildings provide a home for the Budapest Historical Museum, which occupies parts of medieval castle, the National Szécheny Library and the Hungarian National Gallery.
