Telephone cards can be purchased at almost eight thousand sale outlets in the MATÁV telephone card retailing network.

The following are the most widely used:

- post offices,
- MOL filling stations,
- newspaper kiosks,
- IBUSZ travel agency offices,
- ÁPISZ shops,
- TESCO department stores,
- railroad stations, street vendors, taxis and
- MATÁV PONT shops.

To make a local call , pick up the receiver and listen for the neutral and continuous dial tone. Then dial the local number. For a trunk call in Hungary, dial 06 and wait for the second, more musical, tone. Then dial – and don’t forget the area code.

MATAV is the telephone monopoly company although that is about to change. All telephone calls are metered and the charges are calculated by the minute. there are different rates at different time of the day and charges are higher when calling mobile phones.

Local call:

The procedure for making an international call is the same except that you dial 00, followed by the country code and the area code and then the number. You can also get straight through to an operator based in your home country by dialing the ‘Country Direct’ number from a public phone (charges are reversed), but you need a coin or phone-card for the initial connection. Beware that some of the services listed below are very expensive.

You can send telegrams and faxes from most main post offices around Hungary.

Telephone Cards are very useful and can be purchased at post offices and most newsstands.
They are available in versions of 800, 1800 or 5000 HUF, or in the case of older series they may have 50 or 120 units.
