Széchenyi Thermal Bath

The Széchenyi Thermal Bath is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe. It’s also the first thermal bath of Pest. It owes its existence to Vilmos Zsigmondy, a mining engineer.

On his initiative, successful deep borings had been performed in the City Park, where later, in 1881 already an „Artesian bath” was in operation. However, this temporary type of bath was meeting the demands of the age less and less, so the Széchenyi Thermal Bath was built in 1913 on the basis of plans composed by Gyõzõ Czigler.

The Bath was expanded in 1927 with a public bathing department for gentlemen and ladies and a beach site. In the middle of the 1960s, further transformations took place, including the creation of a group thermal section in bathing suits as well as a daytime outpatient hospital (complex physiotherapy department).

Its hot spring – both the city’s hottest and deepest – was discovered in 1879. The neo-baroque building containing the thermal baths dates from 1913 and the adjacent swimming pool opened in 1927. The water is so warm that the outdoor pools are popular with bathers even in the depths of winter! Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the sole one being open till 10 pm in the evening.

Szechenyi Baths is part of a tradition of baths that started during Turkish occupation of the area 600 years ago. It is very affordable, costing $11 US for the day, which includes access to a fitness...

Less commercialized than the Gellert Hotel and Bathhouse, yet in better repair than the Rudas or Kiraly Baths, the Széchenyi Bathhouse is a favorite with locals and in-the-know visitors alike. Swim in one of the two open-air pools, lounge in the Swedish or Turkish sauna, or even sunbathe in the nude on the gender-segregated rooftop areas at this, Europe`s largest complex of medicinal baths. Guests can also indulge in special services like massages, mud packs, and carbonated baths.

The Széchenyi Bath is one of the largest and most well-known baths in Budapest. It is located in the middle of the City Park, across the street from the Budapest Zoo. If you come to Budapest and want to enjoy the famous baths of the city, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath would be one of your choices. The others would be the Gellért Bath and the Rudas Bath.

The bath house is always full of people. In recent years, as the cost of the experience keeps escalating, there percentage of foreigners is also increasing. Actually, tickets seem to cost more than they actually do. There is a complicated system where you buy a ticket and then receive back some of it, depending on how much time you spent in the bath.
