Sculpture of Petofi Sándor

A central figure in the revolution of 1848, Petofi was the author of the National Song and 12 points that inspired the rebellion, besides being a great poet, he quickly became a significant historical figure with the events of the revolution. In 1882, a statue was erected in his honor as well as to commemorate the revolution itself. Credited to sculptor Adolf Huszár, it stands high on a granite pedestal. Huszár had studied at the Vienna Academy and finished the statue after the death of Miklós Izsó who had originally begun the work. It is located on the square also named after him, which lies along the Pest bank of the Danube in the 5th district, not far from Elizabeth Bridge. Petofi Square and March 15th square lie end to end along this stretch of the river.
