Matthias Well

While exploring the Castle District, be sure to take in the many statues and wells. One of particular note is the Matthias Well, also known as the „Budapest Trevi Well”. Decorating the Hunyadi Court of the Buda Castle, it is a large art piece consisting of several statues and of course water. The scene it depicts is of the legendary Renaissance King, Matthias, discovering a young girl he falls in love with while hunting. As the most preferred memorial sculpture of this time, this is a prominent Hungarian monument created by Alajos Stróbl in 1904.

Several other figures appear in the fountain including Szép Ilonka, the girl; Galeotto Martio, the Italian history writer for the King; and the King’s servant signaling the hunt. The busy composition is a favorite resting place for tourists and its beauty can be admired while taking a break from walking the cobblestones of district. It is located between wings D and E of the castle.
