International Bartók Festival Szombathely

An extension of the masterclasses set up in1967, the International Bartók Seminar and Festival was founded in 1985,taking the motto "Bartók - new music". Its standard is indicatedby artists as distinguished as György Kurtág, Miklós Perényi, Zoltán Kocsis, PéterEötvös, Marco Stroppa, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, or the Amadinda percussion ensemble. Inaddition to the work of Bartók and his contemporaries, the masterclasses andconcerts pay increasing attention to contemporary works or to the works, effortsand experiments of the last ten years. The Seminar’s computer music workshop evenattracts participants from across the Atlantic. The Savaria Symphony Orchestra alwaysmakes a significant contribution.

With its monuments from the Roman period,its baroque buildings, its gallery rich in contemporary art and its beautiful naturalsurroundings, Szombathely enriches the programs coming to the BartókFestival. Excursions can be prude to the listed church in Ják, the charminglittle streets of Kõszeg, traditional performances in Velem,or to the famous thermal baths in the remote areas of Bük and Sárvár.Those fond of villages will find a great number of atmospheric settlements to visit. Nature-lovers leave the Õrség, the country’s largest nature reserve.
