Budapest has a great place for ice skating – Városliget, the city park, where city dwellers have been slipping and sliding since at least 1870. In the part of the lake around Vajdahunyad Castle, ice skating lovers have a total area of 12,000 square meters at their disposal in winter. In 1892 the Budapest Skating Union was one of the five founders to establish the International Skating Union (ISU). The most outstanding year in the modern history of the sport is 1980 when Krisztina Regõczy and András Sallay captured the world gold medal in addition to their silver at the Olympics and European Championships. The city prides itself on having the largest and oldest coherent, open-air skating rink in Hungary, and is waiting with open gates for visitors who want to skate from the end of October. It’s quite difficult to resist the temptation to request a song, or socialize with friends in the company of a glass of spicy hot wine.
