Founded with the personal collection of Count Széchényi, the National Museum is dedicated to Hungary’s long, rich history. The building itself is impressive with its huge columns and grand staircase offset from the busy street by a wide garden. Inside you will find more history of Hungary than you could possibly absorb in one visit, with each floor presenting a different era. The top floor exhibiting the period from the foundation of the state onward is a great way to get your bearings and a general understanding of the recent history that shapes Hungarian society today. The museum is also significant as the place where the poet Sándor Petõfi recited the National Song, inspiring the 1848 liberation fight.
