Not your typical museum, the House of Terror highlights a critical part of Hungarian history by bringing its visitors into the actual building once inhabited by the oppressors. Having survived two terror regimes, it was felt that the time had come for Hungary to erect a fitting memorial to the victims, and at the same time to present a picture of what life was like for Hungarians in those times. From the outside, the museum appears as one of the many lovely buildings on Andrássy Avenue, marked as a museum by a huge sign reading „Terror”, yet once inside the significance of the building is clear. At the times eerie, this museum is well worth a visit to better understand this dark part of history and how it affected those who lived under the Arrow Cross Party and the communist-led Political Police. Particularly affective is the prison system located in the basement of the building.
