As the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world, the Dohány Street Synagogue functions as a place of worship, a museum, and a memorial. Located between Astoria and Deák tér, it is a building rich in historical significance. Over the years the synagogue has been used as an internment camp as well as a shelter in addition to its current functions.

It is difficult to select one aspect as the most beautiful, but the Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs located in the rear courtyard stands out. In the form of a weeping willow, each leaf is inscribed with the names of Holocaust victims, and it is sure to cause you to pause and admire its beauty and significance.

The synagogue has a length of 75m and a width of 27m and was built between 1854 and 1859 in Moorish-style, based chiefly on Muslim models from North Africa And Spain. Inside is housed a 5,000 tube organ once played by the famous Ferenc Liszt, and the space is so large it can seat 3,000 people.
