Perhaps not your typical sightseeing destination, the Geological Institute offers a different experience for visitors. If you are not a geology buff, the building itself is worth a visit, as it was designed by Lechner and opened in 1900 as one of the early Secession style buildings. The massive building possesses fabulous architectural and decorative details both inside and out.
Inside, you can visit a museum exhibiting fossils, minerals, and maps as well as the history of the science of geology. There is also library in the institute where you can view a rich collection of documents having to do with geology and its history. The institute is still a functioning and important research center for geological studies and is therefore not open to the public everyday. With a short walk, the Geological Institute can be reached with the M2 metro, trolleys 75 and 77, and buses 7, 73, and 67V.
