Gellért Monument

When crossing the Elizabeth Bridge or hiking up Gellért Hill, you can’t miss the beautiful statue surrounded by a colonnade and overlooking a waterfall, built right into the side of the hill. In the spring and summer the monument is among lush green trees and in the winter it decorates the stone facade. This important statue portrays Gellért, the hill’s namesake, a Benedictine abbot who was once tutor of King Saint Stephan’s son. He was also a crucial figure in the conversion of the Magyars to Christianity. According to local lore, Gellért was thrown down the hill in a barrel of nails during a pagan rebellion in 1046. Although a gruesome tale, the monument itself is quite beautiful and should be enjoyed both from a distance while approaching from the Elizabeth Bridge, as well as up close on a walk up the hill. It also makes a nice resting place where one can view the city on the way up the citadel.
