Gas Factory of Óbuda

.Gas Factory of Óbuda

In 1908 a municipal decision was made to replace several obsolete gas factories with a single new facility. The Gas Factory of Óbuda, built between 1912 and 1914 as the last major investment of pre-war era, was one of Europe’s most modern plants to date. However, due to the prevalence of natural gas the factory slowly became unneeded, and in 1984, after the widespread adoption of gas heating,  the production of coal-based gas was stopped entirely. Strangely enough, the area of the former building complex is awash in archeological relics, and theories abound that there could be Roman, Copper or Bronze Age findings under any or every square meter. In the past two years alone, 430 Roman tombs were excavated and there are estimates of at least several thousand tombs at this location. At the beginning of the 20th century, over remnants of stone buildings besides the burial findings were also unearthed, for instance those of a pre-Christian chapel. Today most parts of the factory’s stately buildings are national industrial monuments, which at present we can unfortunately view only from the outside. Due to great public interest, however, on September 16-17 the area will be opened within the context of Cultural Heritage Day. Then, after registration you can visit the protected parts of the industrial monument in small groups with a guide.
