The city of Budapest erected this memorial in 1980 in honor of Áron Gábor, the famous cannon smith of the 1848-49 revolution. The 3.8m tall andesite and bronze statue depicting a gunsmith forge and an exploded cannonball is the work of Sándor Kiss. The master gunsmith
of Transylvanian origin, who was already a legend in his lifetime, served as artillery major under general Bem and suffered a lethal wound inflicted by a cannon ball in the battle of Kökös against the Russian Tsarist forces. He is remembered, besides several statues, in one of the most famous folk songs of the age, „Gábor Áron rézágyúja” (Áron Gábor’s Copper Cannon). The statue stands at the intersection of the street named after him and the Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor in Buda district II.
