Not only does this special method of transportation allow you to enjoy a fantastic view, but it is also fun! The Funicular, or lift, will take you up to the Buda Castle District from Clark Ádám Square, at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge. At the time it was opened, in 1870, this was Europe’s second funicular and was the only means of transport to reach the castle area.
Originally it was powered by a steam traction engine, a modern technology of the time, but today it relies on electricity.
The funicular was only reopened twenty years ago, after having been destroyed in WWII. Now it carries between 500,000 and 1,000,000 passengers annually. Originally it went faster speed, but at the request of the public, it was slowed down so the view could be enjoyed.
The Budavári Sikló takes passengers up and down the hill from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm, running constantly during busy periods and traveling every 10 minutes during off peak times.
