The Citadel sits on top of Gellért Hill, overlooking the entire city. In fact, this is one of, if not the, best views of Budapest. It was built in 1854 by the Habsburgs after the suppression of the 1848-1849 revolution. After the compromise with the Habsburgs, Hungarians demanded the destruction of the Citadel, but by the time they finally left, the decision was made to turn it into a tourist site rather than destroy it. Now, you can find a few museums here, including a photo exhibition spanning 1850-1945 and a waxworks exhibit about World War II, located in an actual bunker. There is also a restaurant and café located here. You can reach the Citadel by walking up any of the paths on the hill, or by bus 27 from Móricz Zsigmond circle.
