Located on Gellért Hill, and approachable from Gellért Square, this is a unique chapel built directly into the rocks of the hill. A true cave when entered, the chapel was founded in the 1920s by Pauline monks. Closed in 1951 by the communists police in an effort against the Chatholic Church, the chapel was only reopened again in 1989. Today is in operation and can be visited by tourists when there are no services being conducted.
Once you have entered through the iron gate, the chapel is an interesting mix of traditional church elements the and the natural formation of the rocks. While not particularly large, it is rather beautiful as it encompasses the natural rock elements that characterize the hill. The silence is also quite calming, making it an ideal place to reflect. To get there take bus 7 or 86, or tram 18, 19, 47, or 118 to Szent Gellért tér.
