The MÁV ticket office ( 322 8275) at VI Andrássy út 35 (metro: Opera) sells international train tickets and can make advance seat reservations for domestic express trains at the same price you’d pay at the station. They accept cash only and are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (6 p.m. in summer).
If the queues are long at MÁV (often the case), head for Ibusz ( 322 I 656) at VII Dob utca 1 (metro: Astoria or Deák tér), which sells the same tickets and can also make seat reservations. They’re open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Express ( 311 9898), V Zoltán utca 10 (metro: Kossuth Lajos tér); open Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday to 3 p.m., sells BIJ train tickets with a 30% discount on fares to Western Europe to those under the age of 26.
The main Express office ( 317 8600) at V Semmelweis utca 4 (metro: Astoria) and Wasteels next to track No 9 at Keleti train station also sell these tickets.
You must have an ISIC card to get the student fare, but there are no student fares on domestic train travel.
