"verry good informations"

Razvan, Bucharest (Romania)

"i certainly would like to come back to Budapest in the near future as I was unable to see much on the trip. As I have no language only English I found it difficult to explain myself to many people."

Patrick, Galway (Ireland)

"budapest is nice and beautiful place , people are lovely and cooperative"

Abdul Razak, Muscat (Oman)

"I had a great time in Budapest. Living in Czech capital, I experienced an uncanny feeling of similarity of Budapest with Prague. I like budapesthotels.com because they confirmed my reservation sooner than it was guaranteed. I booked a room up a few hours before I left to Budapest so I was a but worried that my reservation would not be processed on time. But it was. "

Tereza, Prague (Czech Republic)

"I dont have anything negative to say about it. Only words of praise. What I liked the most was the very candid presentation of the offer. I liked also the fact that I got exactly what I was told I was going to get."

Mihaela, Bucharest (Romania)

"Budapest is a lovely city and I had a wonderful time. "

Carolyn, Lincoln (United states)

Books & Maps

The Hungarian Tourist Board (HTB), a branch of the Ministry of Industry & Trade, produces many free brochures and pamphlets in English. Some of them are just colourful map while others are extremely useful and written with style and humour. They are often available at HTB, Ibusz and Malev Hungarian Airlines offices abroad, inside Hungary you’ll find them at HTB’s tourist information offices called Tourinform, as well as at independent travel bureaus and agencies, Malev offices and expensive hotels.

Two publications to get hold of are the monthly Programme in Ungarn/in Hungary and the annual Preliminary Calendar of Events, which list concerts, opera and ballet performances, musicals, puppet shows, circuses, sporting events, exhibitions, museums and many other events and attractions around the country. Books are good value in Hungary and many titles are available in English. While visiting Budapest be sure to pick up an indexed city map at a bookstore.

The Corvina History of Hungary, written by seven leading historians and edited by Peter Hanak, is fairly comprehensive but rather dull. Hungary: A Brief History (also from Corvina) is a light, almost silly history by geologist-cum-journalist Istvan Lazar. A History of Modern Hungary by Jorg K Hoensch covers the period from 1867 to 1994 in a balanced, though somewhat dry way. Another serious work is The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 edited by Gyorgy Litvan. For a clear, insightful interpretation of what led to the collapse of Communism in 1989, read Misha Glenny’s updated The Rebirth of History.

The Magyarorszag Autoatlasza/Road Atlas of Hungary contains 231:360,000 road maps of Hungary plus small street maps of almost every village and town in the country and a complete index. Cartographia also publishes a folding 1:500,000 scale Hungary map. The Budapest Atlas, also from Cartographia, has 40 detailed maps of the city, an index with all the new street names and some descriptive information in English.

Tourinform has a web site with tourist information at http://www.hungarytourism.hu/
