Although the Renaissance flourished briefly here during the late 15th century, Hungary was isolated from the mainstream of European cultural development during the long period of Turkish rule (1526-1686). Then came domination by the Austrian Habsburgs until 1918 and, more recently, external interference from Nazi Germany and the USSR. Against this background, it’s not surprising that the work of Hungarian writers and artists has reflected the struggle against oppression.
