The Budapest Zoo is a conservation and research center with internationally recognized breeding programs for endangered native and exotic species. Home to the leading animal collection in Eastern Europe with more than 2,000 animals, the population is of international repute. Youngsters can enjoy contact with tame animals in the Children’s Zoo and  „Animals in action” shows that run twice a day. In addition, one can view ancient Hungarian livestock in the „ Farm in the Metropolis”, a peasant farm of period buildings from upper Tisza region. Swallow bellied wooly pigs, bold necked hens, spotted cattle, cikta sheep, and hucul horses are the stars of this unique exhibit. The lovely park is under conservation order with remarkable trees, shrubs and flower beds. A 130 year old beautiful zoo with listed art nouveau and national style buildings of the best Hungarian architects, this is really an oasis of calm in a bustling city.
