The plot of Andrea Chénier takes place before and during the French Revolution. Almost all of the characters are historical people, the main character too. For some time the era’s typical characters appear, Robespierre himself, and Fouquier-Tinville.
The main virtue of Giordano’s music is that with rich and telling instrumental recitals and solo parts from within (which are more like monologues rather than closed arias) superbly creates the atmosphere of the long-standing order’s fall and the revolution. Paints a beautiful picture about the rioting and confused crowd and in it the child of the revolution, the sneak, or the maid who sells her body for her lord’s life.
