`Veronika Harcsa Quartet`, Budapest Festival Theatre, 8 June
Two or three years ago, Veronika Harcsa suddenly appeared from nowhere in Hungarian jazz life. She has never tried to grab the coat tails of established musicians or joined any clique. She has made it from her own strength. |
Veronika Harcsa Quartet |
She first attracted attention at the Budapest Fringe Festival and last year at the first Jazz Showcase talent show at the Palace of Arts, she perhaps excited the greatest international interest.
Her highlight of 2008 was a tour to Japan in May, which had the pleasant addition of promoting her CD, which contains her own compositions and it is now a great hit over there. Published in Hungary as You Don’t Know It’s You, the composition Too Early was hugely successful on MR2 Petofi Radio.
She leads her own band, which has a permanent line-up and they provide the secure musical background for her recent third disc Red Baggage. Again, her compositions again seem to hit the spot. They cleverly fuse jazzy melodies, witty English lyrics, a free and easy rhythm section and sophisticated solo play. Besides the songs on this album, this Monday evening concert will also showcase some of this fecund songwriter’s more recent songs and she has invited some surprise guests along to help her.
Veronika Harcsa – vocals, Attila Blaho – piano, Zoltán Oláh – double bass, Bálint Majtényi – drums
