Holland Tsunami at Keleti station
Flood of humanity A tsunami hits the Netherlands, and 170,000 residents have to be evacuated within days. Apart from Hungary, no country is willing to accept the Dutch refugees. It hasn’t happened yet, but the documentary-style play Holland Tsunami on 11 and 12 March aims to allow the audience to feel part of the imaginary crisis.
Video footage reveals the current situation in the Netherlands: the attitude of the residents to Hungary and Europe, what national identity means to them, as well as the response of the Hungarians to the coming of the Dutch.
The play takes place at Keleti railway station, the refugees’ arrival point in Budapest. The audience will experience how Hungary reacts to the influx of refugees. Holland Tsunami takes on the air of a documentary, which is the reason why the piece is not performed on a normal theatre stage.
The Dutch-Hungarian theatre company Space, founded by Petra Ardai and Luc van Loo, is not a new name to the Hungarian public. In April last year, the group performed its piece Monument to the Present. Viewers were equipped with iPods and took part in a virtual and a real walk through Budapest and its history, enhanced by installations and audio-visual effects.
