Aquincum Spa

 The therapy center of the AQUINCUM CORINTHIA HOTEL is based on the thermal water coming from Margaret Island.
The healing water enters the hotel at a temperature of 158oF (70oC) and is cooled down to 91 oF (36oC) and 104oF(10oC) preserving the active curative ingredients.

 The essential element of the water is sulfate. The mildly concentrated solution does not have the typical offensive sulfuric odor. The remaining minerals and gaseous elements are efficacious both in hydrotherapy and in treatments including drinking the mineral water.

 Thermal water therapy has proved to be helpful in the following conditions: joint and muscle disorders, degenerative nerve conditions, postinjury therapy after fractures, skeletal deformities and peripheral circulation disorders.
Regular bathing treatments in the thermal waters of Margaret Island have found to reduce joint and muscle spasm. Hydrotherapy used in post-injury treatment at specific temperatures and for specified period of time tends to result in less problematic convalescence.

 For rheumatic problems the curative water is effective partly through the use of therapeutic equipment and partly through the breakdown of the mineral substances which contain the main curative components. Through continued regular treatments, good results can be obtained in degenerative, post-inflammatory conditions of muscles, joints.
Rheumatic diseases can be favourably affected by combined therapy programs which include baths, massages, mud-packs, electrotherapy and meditations. Good results can be obtained in breaking down the chronically inflamed areas. Remarkable improvement has been noted in the treatment of dysmenorrhea. The gaseous content of the water is quite significant. It appears on analysis that the gas content of the water produces an even film of small bubbles on the surface of the body. The gas emission is not so intense as to produce a sparkling quality, but guests bathing in the Aquincum Spa still feel that this is not an ordinary water bath, but more like being enveloped in a coat of bubbles.

 The effect thus reduced is comparable to that of a carbon gas bath. The concentration of carbonic acid is too low to cause dilatation of the capillaries or the sensation of warmth. Consequently the routine thermal baths in the Aquincum Spa are not, in the strict sense of the word, true carbonic baths. They are however very well suited for the treatment of circulatory problems especially for those which the real carbonic bath is less beneficial or perhaps even dangerous.It is well known that the moderate temperature of Margaret Island's thermal water is particularly reassuring for those with hypertension caused by arteriosclerosis or with diseases of the myocardium or coronary arteries.

 Since thermal baths taken regularly have a distinctive soothing effect, they seem to be a useful therapeutic adjunct for different forms of functional neuroses.

 With its modern equipment meeting all professional specifications, Margaret Island's thermal water can be used for all kinds of combination treatments such as tub baths, massages, warm and cold showers, carbonic acid baths, mud-packs and using extensive weight equipment. For mud packs, medicinal mud brought in from Lake Heviz is combined with the thermal water. In addition to the above mentioned treatments, the Aquincum Spa can offer other physical therapy methods such as low frequency electric treatments (ionthophoresis, galvanic current, interference current, ultra-sound, phototherapy). Thermal water can be used in combined treatment with the electric baths in which dissolved components diffuse through the skin during the iontophoresis, to augment the therapeutic effect of healing water, massage or gymnastic programs are often prescribed. For this purpose, the Aquincum Spa has the most up-to-date facilities.

 The clinical laboratory is thoroughly equipped with instruments for every conceivable clinical examination. The Spa maintains a close relationships with the National Institute of Rheumatologhy and Physiotherapy and when necessary, prominent specialists are consulted in difficult cases.

 Current and comprehensive treatment is provided by a staff of experienced physicians. A highly qualified professional staff works closely with them to aid in the recuperation of spa patients.
